The Story & Significance of Kirtimukha
The Story & Significance of Kirtimukha
Kirtimukha, meaning Face of Glory, has a fascinating origin in Hindu mythology.
According to the story associated with Lord Shiva, the demon king Jalandhara sent Rahu to Lord Shiva with a demand for Goddess Parvati. Enraged by this audacity, Lord Shiva manifested a fierce, lion-faced being from his forehead.
The creature pursued Rahu, but when Rahu sought Lord Shiva's protection, Shiva commanded the creature to spare him. Left with an insatiable hunger, the creature was instructed to consume its own body until only its face remained.
Pleased by this extraordinary act, Lord Shiva named it Kirtimukha and blessed it with the honour of guarding the entrances of his temples.
Since then, Kirtimukha has been regarded as a powerful guardian symbol, traditionally placed above temple entrances to ward off negative forces and protect sacred spaces.
